"Bulletproof Love" by Method Man
AH Video Review Rated:
Let’s talk about a Bulletproof Black Man for a moment.
While there was no official video made for Bulletproof Love, Method Man’s cameo in Marvel’s Luke Cage did us one better. Directed by Cheo Hodari Coker, we got Method Man spittin a verse on Sway in the Morning. Marvel’s Luke Cage infused a lot of hip hop music into the first season of their Netflix series. The theme of how police are brutalizing black men in our communities was also intelligently woven into the script. (Also check out RZA Directed Ironfist Immortal Emerges From Cave)
Being that Luke Cage is a Bulletproof Black Man, the cops were unable to use their usual tactics.
When we consider how relevant those themes are in the every day lives of black people, you’ll begin to understand why this show was so well embraced. Not only is it about a comic book ‘hero’, but the theme is right on time. Just as Method Man says in Bulletproof Love, “A hero never had one, they took away Martin and Malcolm, this the last one.”
The issues so many of these inner-city communities face are problems that can be solved.
What we need are people who understand that hip hop is not just for your entertainment. While describing the conditions the ‘character’ Method Man was playing in the show, he could’ve easily been talking about what happens in the real world. Mentioning how Trayvon Martin never got to live his life, because it was cut short by a police wanna-be. Too many people have negative views of black people, and perhaps if a bulletproof black man were to emerge. (You might also like Marvel’s Ironfist Soundtrack Features Hip Hop Artists)
