"DNA" by Kendrick Lamar
AH Video Review Rated:
I got, I got, I got that new review, for Kendrick Lamar’s DNA video – dropped hours ago!
Featuring Don Cheadle, and Schoolboy Q – and also Kendrick aka Kung Fu Kenny.
4 power fists for the video – something a little different from what we’ve seen. Sticking to overarching themes in our society, usually black police are the first to sell us all out. Dead N*gger Association? (hard R …) Yea, that’s the kinda slick shit a sell out would say too. We can relate, we feel the message, love that he used Don as a pawn to talk to all who play that Role in this system.
As Don, (the black police officer, with sellout dna) touches the same lie detector that Kendrick is hooked to, some of his energy transmits. After… what is DNA but cells that transmit from one to another? Both of them have a real discussion, one that we often see play out on social media when not in person. As real ones, face off against our own, who continually work ‘for the system’.
DNA is the first song on Kendrick Lamar’s album DAMN. Just as there is a ‘transfer of energy’ in the first part of the song, again, new energy emerges to close the single out.
As Kendrick transitions to the second verse, we see a car filled with girls having a great time. That ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ playing in the car, as the soundtrack. Symbolizing what came ‘before’, almost as the real DNA of this next album.
The second verse of DNA though, is really where K.dot goes full ham on em. Not just lyrically but visually as well. It’s all mixed in with clips of him, and his crew, and this car of ladies spinning around. Loyalty inside the DNA for real, as many TDE members are recognizable. As K.dot continues to rise, he’s bringing his people with him. This is also a ‘sign’ of what separates our real ones, from those of us who seek individual gain at the rest of our expense. We are not all built the same.
I appreciated the video taking it up a notch at the same time, as the song. MC’s … Take notes …. Royalty
- Also be sure to check out another ‘kid from Compton’, Kanin, with Fantasies and Madness Everywhere
- and the Every Day Pressure too many black men and women going through – from Compton’s own, Buddy
